Somebody told you not to touch the sooty wall with a wet cloth, and to buy a chemical sponge instead. Then you searched for one and found it is not chemical at all.
That confusion is worth clearing up first, because the name puts people off a tool that is genuinely the right first step after most fires.
Here is what it is, how it works, and the five minutes of technique that decide whether it helps or smears.
It also has real limits. There is a whole category of fire residue it will not touch, and knowing which one you have saves an afternoon.
What is a dry cleaning sponge made of?
A dry cleaning sponge is a solid block of vulcanized natural latex rubber, usually about six inches by three by an inch and a half, sold individually wrapped.
It carries several names for the same object. Chemical sponge, soot sponge, soot eraser, dry sponge and dirt eraser all describe the same rubber block.
The word chemical refers to the manufacturing process, not to any treatment on the sponge. There is no cleaner in it, no solvent, and nothing that transfers to your wall.
That is why conservators use them on books, prints and painted artwork. If a tool is safe on a museum drawing, it is safe on your ceiling.
The texture is important. It feels slightly tacky and very slightly crumbly, and it is softer than a household sponge rather than more abrasive.
How does a dry cleaning sponge actually lift soot?
By absorption and pickup, not by scrubbing. The open cells in the rubber trap soot particles and carry them away inside the sponge.
It behaves like a pencil eraser that does not crumble much. Each stroke rolls loose particles up into the surface pores and holds them there.
That is why it works dry and only dry. Add water and the same particles turn into a slurry that spreads sideways and soaks into the paint film.
Fresh soot from synthetics is also acidic once it meets moisture. Wetting it first is how a light grey film becomes a permanent brown stain in the drywall.

How do you use a dry cleaning sponge correctly?
The technique is short and the mistakes are all the same mistake. Straight lines, no pressure, no water.
- Vacuum first with a HEPA filter and a soft brush head, held slightly off the surface so the nozzle never touches the wall.
- Start at the ceiling and work down. Falling soot lands on wall you have not cleaned yet, rather than on wall you have.
- Take one straight stroke in a single direction, about two feet long, using the flat face of the sponge and almost no pressure.
- Overlap the next stroke slightly, in the same direction. Do not go back and forth over the same line.
- Turn the sponge to a clean face as soon as the working face looks grey, which happens faster than you expect.
- Peel a used layer off with a razor blade when all faces are loaded, exposing fresh rubber underneath.
- Change gloves and vacuum the floor between rooms so you are not carrying residue around the house.
Circles are the classic error. A circular motion drives particles into the paint texture and leaves a grey haze that no amount of later cleaning removes.
Pressure is the second error. Pushing hard does not lift more soot, it just burnishes the residue into the surface and wears the sponge out faster.
Test one hidden patch first, behind a door or above a cabinet, and look at it in daylight. If it lifts cleanly, the rest of the wall will behave the same way.
What surfaces does it work on?
Anything dry and reasonably solid, including several things people assume need a wet clean.
- Painted walls and ceilings: the main use, and where the difference between dry and wet is starkest.
- Wallpaper: often the only method that works, since most wallpaper cannot take water at all.
- Acoustic and drop ceiling tiles: extremely porous, extremely unforgiving of moisture, and often salvageable dry.
- Lampshades, books and paper: the conservation use, done with very light strokes.
- Upholstery and drapes: a dry pass first removes surface soot before any extraction, which stops the fabric from staining.
- Unfinished wood and brick: works, though heavily textured surfaces will hold residue in the low spots.

What will a dry cleaning sponge not clean?
This is the part that gets left out. A dry cleaning sponge handles dry, powdery, carbon rich residue and struggles with everything else.
- Greasy kitchen soot: oily residue from a grease fire clogs the sponge in a few strokes and smears rather than lifts.
- Protein residue: the near invisible film from burned meat or dairy is sticky and bonded, and needs a solvent based cleaner.
- Anything already wet: if the wall took firefighting water, the residue is set and the dry stage has passed.
- Heat stained or yellowed paint: discolouration in the paint film is not a surface deposit, so nothing lifts it.
- Charred material: if the surface is burned rather than coated, cleaning is the wrong category entirely.
The tell is how the sponge behaves in the first two strokes. A clean grey load means it is working. A shiny smear means you have greasy residue.
Even with greasy soot the dry pass is still worth doing first. It removes the loose top layer so the degreaser has less to dissolve and spread.
The other honest limit is texture. On heavily orange peel or knockdown drywall, the sponge cleans the high points and leaves residue sitting in every low spot.
You will see that as a wall that looks clean straight on and grey when light rakes across it. That is a repaint conversation, not a cleaning one.
Flat and matte paint behaves the same way for a different reason. The finish is porous, so particles sit inside the film rather than on top of it.
Eggshell, satin and semi gloss all clean far better, which is why kitchens and bathrooms usually recover more easily than a matte painted living room.

Dry sponging disturbs less airborne dust than vacuuming or wet wiping, which is one of its quiet advantages. It is not dust free.

Keep anyone with asthma, any child under five, and any pet bird out of the room while you work, and ventilate afterwards rather than during.
Is it worth buying for a small fire?
For a genuinely small fire, yes, and it may be the only thing you need to buy. Ten dollars of sponge beats a hundred dollars of the wrong cleaner.
It is also the honest test of scale. If a dry pass over one wall leaves it looking normal, you have a cleaning job, not a restoration job.
