What is the first step to clean soot off kitchen cabinets?

Start with a HEPA vacuum and a soft brush nozzle. Hold the bristles just off the surface so you lift particles instead of grinding them into the finish.

Then use a dry chemical sponge, sold as a soot sponge or dry cleaning sponge. It is a vulcanized rubber block that grabs dry soot with no liquid at all.

Wipe in single straight strokes, one direction only, and never scrub back and forth. Turn to a clean face of the sponge every few passes.

Greasy residue will not fully release dry, and that is normal. The dry pass still removes the bulk carbon so your wet pass is not just spreading it around.

Which degreaser and dilution actually cut greasy soot?

Grease needs an alkaline degreaser, not a neutral spray. Restoration concentrates for smoke and grease residue mix around 8 to 12 ounces per gallon of warm water for heavy kitchen work.

At home, a degreaser concentrate mixed at the label's heavy soil rate does the job. Use warm water, not cold, because heat softens the grease film before the chemistry touches it.

The old federal recipe still holds up. The USFA recovery guide lists 4 to 6 tablespoons of TSP plus one cup of household cleaner in a gallon of warm water for soot on woodwork.

TSP is caustic and it dulls varnish and clouds paint if you let it dwell. Many people use a TSP substitute on finished doors and save real TSP for surfaces that are getting repainted anyway.

  • Test first on a hidden spot, like the inside face of a lower door, and wait ten minutes before judging it.
  • Never spray the cabinet. Wet the cloth, wring it hard, and wipe, so nothing runs down into seams and hinge holes.
  • Work bottom to top. Drips onto a dirty surface streak permanently, drips onto a clean surface do not.
  • Rinse with clear water after each small section, then dry it right away instead of letting it air dry.
  • Skip abrasive pads and melamine erasers on finished doors. They burnish the sheen and leave a dull patch you cannot fix.

Change the rinse water constantly. Once it turns gray you are just redistributing soot, which is why people end up cleaning the same door three times.

How do you clean soot off kitchen cabinets by finish type?

The finish decides the method. A sealed oak door and a thermofoil door react to the same damp cloth in completely different ways.

  • Finished wood: damp cloth with degreaser, quick clear rinse, dry immediately. Follow the grain and never let liquid stand in a corner.
  • Painted wood or painted MDF: weaker dilution, no ammonia, no bleach. Water swells an exposed MDF edge permanently, so keep the cloth barely damp.

Thermofoil is the fragile one. Cabinet industry guidance puts the bond at risk once sustained temperatures pass roughly 150 degrees Fahrenheit, which is why doors near a range peel first.

On real wood, an oil soap afterward restores the look, but only once the surface is genuinely rinsed. Sealing residue under an oil coat locks the smell in.

Pull the hardware. Soak knobs, pulls, and hinges in hot degreaser solution in a bucket, because the grease ring under a knob base never wipes off in place.

What about the inside of the cabinets, the dishes, and the food?

Which cabinet zones does almost everyone miss?

Heat and smoke rise, then run sideways along the ceiling. That puts the heaviest residue exactly where nobody looks.

  • The tops of the wall cabinets. Old cooking grease already lives up there, and fresh soot bonds into it as a sticky black skin.
  • The underside of the uppers over the range. This zone takes the most direct heat and often shows scorching, not just film.

When does a cabinet have to be refinished or replaced instead?

Cleaning fails at a predictable point. Once the finish itself is damaged, no chemistry brings it back, and the real choice is refinish, reface, or new doors.

  • Blistered, bubbled, or crazed topcoat from radiant heat. The clear coat is cooked, so the door has to be stripped or replaced.
  • Peeling thermofoil. Once the vinyl lifts off the MDF core it cannot be reliably rebonded, so the door gets replaced.
  • Swollen or crumbling particleboard from firefighting water. That is structural, not cosmetic, and it will not dry back flat.
